I like this idea, too.  This is a good use for AJAX, you dynamically 
load the contents of a popup <div> when the user clicks the icon.  An 
icon with a question mark is a LOT more obvious than hyperlinking the 
field names.

Something else I've seen done in other software is to have really short 
descriptions of the fields in a column on the right-hand side, which is 
shown by default, with links to "more info" on the ones that need more 
description, and a user preference to hide that help column.  Can't get 
much more obvious than that :)
