Attaching a patch to a bug is a good next step.  I'd suggest attaching 
an early version (and indicating that it is one) and asking for feedback 
early in the process.  Your first few patches often wind up getting a 
suprisingly detailed critique.  Until you get the hang of what the 
reviewers look for, it can be a bit of a shocker.
