os metadata / getting rid of enums

turns out there's a bug specifically opened on this thread's topic:

i'm going to hack together a patch for this over the holidays here, so
i'll have something in a week or so. 

just for clarity: should i submit code here first for feedback (as
opposed to attaching a patch to a bug)?
