Upgrading from 5.1.2 to 5.2 also fails due to permission issues:

It's counter-intuitive, but 5.2 is actually a DOWNGRADE from 5.1.2, you can't do that.

The 5.1.x branch is mostly abandoned at this point (though we still have some fixes coming for some more critical issues). We started over with a fork from bugzilla.mozilla.org's customized version for Bugzilla 6. The upgrade path from 5.1.2 will be to 5.9.1 when it comes out (it's not ready for people to switch to it from 5.1.x yet)

5.2 (which actually hasn't been released yet, and should be reporting its version as 5.0.6+ when you run checksetup.pl) is actually forked from 5.0.6+ because a new-to-the-process release manager goofed with the 5.0.5 release a long time ago and we had to fix that goof (changes were made that should have required a new branch and a minor version bump instead of a bugfix bump on the same branch).
