Stalled custom field development

Actually, it is not paralyzed at all unless someone is foolish enough to 
try to do the whole thing in one huge patch that will never land.  There 
are a bunch of prerequisites that are not controversial at all and are 
not impacted by the schema choice.  If you want to work on one of them, 
that would be a good start.  I'd sugest you start with one of the 
fielddefs changes that make the code figure out what the field list is 
rather than having 20 distinct places in the code where the field list 
is hardcoded.
