I'm in the same category; I like having it all in one screen.
Having said that, I agree that it can be annoying, especially when people
are being inconsiderate of existing conversations. (I find it very annoying
when someone asks repeated questions 'ssdbot XXXX YYYY bugs' when people are
trying to talk.) There must be better ways to be doing it.
I am not an IRC guru so I don't know what they're called, but I've seen
messages displayed in such a way that only I can see them (they usually have
brown text on mIRC, if that helps) when I ask a bot a question in other IRC
channels, but it's put in the same screen and not a private message. Could
something like this be done for the answers to 'ssdbot ___ ___ bugs'
questions? Perhaps it could even be done for normal checkin messages, so as
to provide a way to visually differentiate between conversation and
bot-messages.
One drawback is that such text may not go into the permanent log... but is
that a big issue?
