Some upcoming changes to Search.pm to fix a number of search bugs would cause a performance slowdown for elaborate queries using Mysql 3, but would stay fast if the site is using mysql 4.0.14 or newer. Does it seem reasonable to expect larger sites that care about performance to use mysql4 ??
