FYI, I started fiddling with Dia after reading this message and produced 
a version attached to bug 127631. One nice thing about Dia is that it 
saves as XML so it can be checked into CVS and actually keep revision 
history/diffs :). That does, however, require not saving in the 
"compressed" format.
