Yes, this would be cool, and I'd happily review the patch, but only if 
it were entirely optional (as Dave outlines.)

It would be good if this fit in as closely as possible with the template 
model. I'd prefer it to be structured as a "special" template which 
basically had a call out to the Excel writer than add special exceptions 
to the CGI/module code. Does that make sense?

File a bug on this and we can discuss it further. :-)
