That's possible, but makes it really hard to roll your own.

The current implementation needs to go away - we need to store IDs in
the database for stored queries and so on.

That's up to an administrator to decide ... these are demonstrating
possibilities, not the final resolutions, and I don't think they are
doing a bad job of that.
