SAML or OpenID authentication?

The way I've usually seen it done is to set up Bugzilla to use Environment auth (which takes the user identity passed through by the web server) and then use an Apache module that implements the SSO and passes it through.

It seems to me several of the larger Bugzilla instances out there (openSuSE, RedHat, etc.) have SAML working with Bugzilla somehow, but I can't seem to figure out how and I've spent a lot of time searching. It looks like there was an OpenID plugin made at one point but it's been abandoned for some time. Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas how to do this?
