Message-ID: <4D2DE0DF.2000301@gmail.com> Hi all, While talking with a contributor about bug 432976 [1], I said you couldn't currently let an assignee know that he is close to the deadline unless this assignee is in the timetracking group (else you would disclose what is currently considered as confidential information). Then the question was: how is it useful to set the deadline for bugs if assignees cannot see it? I think this question is pertinent, and I think that's the only time-related field (i.e. amongst those affected by the timetracking group) whose visibility shouldn't be affected by the timetracking group. Or to be more precise, I think that the deadline should be visible to everybody (to logged in users only? IMO, useless complexity if the answer is yes), but only members of the timetracking group should be allowed to edit it. Other time-related fields do not need to be visible to the assignee, because this shouldn't affect his work. Would there be objections if we relax the deadline *visibility* to everybody, but still require timetracking privs to edit it? That's not the same story. You cannot assign a bug to you if you cannot see it. But here, if I want to know the deadline of a bug I can see, then all I need to do is to briefly assign the bug to me. If the goal is to guarantee some confidentiality, then this is a weak protection (except that this would prevent users with no privs from seeing it, and social pressure would prevent users trying to abuse this trick). I think that what we should do is implement some generic controls for which groups can see which fields, and then split the deadline field out of the time-tracking fields. Some people are going to have hard requirements for who can and can't see the deadline field, but adding logic to make it always visible to just the assignee is going to be complex. Instead I think that we should make it part of the standard fields by default, but hide-able by some organizations if they want to do that. -Max -- http://www.everythingsolved.com/ Competent, Friendly Bugzilla and Perl Services. Just wanted to let you know that we have our first entry in the Bugzilla:Pretty contest. A guy named David Elliott sent in a redesign home page. It's at the bottom of the page, here: http://wiki.mozilla.org/Bugzilla:Pretty He said that a redesigned bug view page is coming. (If you look at the contest rules, it notes that a good start is to redesign the index page and then do the bug view page.) No critiques or judging of the entry yet, please--at least not here on a public mailing list. If you want to talk about it in IRC or in private, that's fine. :-) General final judging, though, we should reserve for when the contest is closed and we have all entries available for comparison. -Max -- http://www.everythingsolved.com/ Competent, Friendly Bugzilla and Perl Services. Indeed! > > However, we need more people to show up! How do we get new developers? > What are some bright ideas for encouraging new people to help out on the > Bugzilla Project? Well, I think people show up when they: 1. Use Bugzilla, 2. When they need any help on customizations, bug fixes, etc, 3. When they want their customization/bug fixes to be in upstream, 4. They have fun when programming in Perl :), 5. etc. So I think the main reason people show up is because Bugzilla does not do what they want, and eventually, they starting contributing with things they think are interesting for the community. The more they get patches accepted, the more they will contribute. New ideas/features for Bugzilla also help to motivate people to show up, because they see Bugzilla as a good place to make suggestions. The 'Make Bugzilla Pretty' initiative I think is an excellent way to start. I see people complaining that Bugzilla is written in Perl. There are lot of misunderstanding around there about Perl, saying Perl is evil is hard to learn and understand... But it's our obligation to prove the opposite and show Bugzilla as a good example of how Perl can be applied. More meeting also I think can help... Meetings can be setup not only for a small group of people, but we could provide an way to everyone to participate, also, since we are a global team, we could organize meetings in our location based on previous meeting contents. Also, every location has at least one open source conference and we should submit papers for them to take advantage of the meeting and show Bugzilla. We could talk about cases of success of Bugzilla, how to customize Bugzilla using extensions, how fun is to contribute! Etc.! > Also, who would like to be in charge of encouraging new people to start > working on Bugzilla? With everything taken into consideration, I would estimate that there are something like 25% more installations out there than we have numbers here for--possibly even more. But it's hard to say--the individual numbers are mostly meaningless. This does give us an idea if we're generally getting *more* or *less* popular though, looking at the trend of the graph over time. And it also tells us that people don't use their Bugzillas much over Christmas break. :-D -Max -- http://www.bugzillasource.com/ Competent, Friendly Bugzilla, Perl, and IT Services From mkanat at bugzilla.org Tue Jan 25 06:55:59 2011 From: mkanat at bugzilla.org (Max Kanat-Alexander) Date: Mon, 24 Jan 2011 22:55:59 -0800 Subject: Recruiting Developers! I've heard of projects doing various forms of advertising--sometimes people are just looking for a project to hack on. > So I think the main reason people show up is because Bugzilla does not do what they want, and > eventually, they starting contributing with things they think are interesting for the community. That's been true for most of us, I think, yeah. But I wonder if there are other people that we could encourage to contribute. > The 'Make Bugzilla Pretty' initiative I think is an excellent way > to start. Thanks. :-) Hopefully once Bugzilla is pretty we'll have even more users, too, and then people will want to contribute more. It will probably also encourage more designers to work on Bugzilla, which would be good. > I see people complaining that Bugzilla is written in Perl. There are lot of misunderstanding around there > about Perl, saying Perl is evil is hard to learn and understand... But it's our obligation to prove the > opposite and show Bugzilla as a good example of how Perl can be applied. Well, some of that is just a factor of how many people know or learn Perl. I don't see a lot of new programmers learning Perl these days, which seems to indicate that as time goes on, the community of available Perl developers will get smaller and smaller. I don't think people learn a new language just to contribute to a project--although sometimes it does happen. I think people are more likely to contribute to projects when they already know the language. > also, since we are a global team, we could organize > meetings in our location based on previous meeting contents. That's a good idea. :-) We'd need somebody to coordinate that, though, and help people set up meetings in their local areas. > Also, every location has at least one open source > conference and we should submit papers for them to take advantage of the meeting and show Bugzilla. We could > talk about cases of success of Bugzilla, how to customize Bugzilla using extensions, how fun is to contribute! These are great ideas. I'm not personally near enough to most conventions to contribute, but anybody who's near a convention is welcome to submit a paper to talk about Bugzilla, and I'd be happy to give tips about what you can talk about. > I can help, but I don't think it should be one person only, but a team. The most effective way to get new Bugzilla developers is to cannibalize them from similar projects. The person or team that undertakes to attract new developers should focus less on convincing Bugzilla users that they might find satisfaction from contributing and more on convincing open-source programmers to abandon their loser project in favor of Bugzilla. From lpsolit at gmail.com Wed Jan 26 14:10:34 2011 From: lpsolit at gmail.com (=?ISO-8859-1?Q?Fr=E9d=E9ric_Buclin?=) Date: Wed, 26 Jan 2011 15:10:34 +0100 Subject: QA work now tracked on bmo Message-ID: <4D402B5A.4040205@gmail.com> Hello all, Per today discussion with justdave on IRC, he agreed that the QA team now tracks its work on bmo instead of bugzillaqa. I created a "QA Test Scripts" component dedicated to our QA work, where we can now report bugs about missing or broken Selenium, RPC and configuration scripts we use for QA. There are several reasons for this move: - We no longer use Testopia, which was the reason we created a separate Bugzilla installation on landfill to track progress when we were still testing new releases manually (that was in 2006). - No need to manage a separate installation ourselves. - Rather than using the "See Also" field to point to bmo bugs, we can now simply use the "depends on" or "blocks" fields. - We can use the same flags as for other bugs, including the blocking one if some QA stuff MUST be done before a release (such as testing new or modified webservice methods). This will help us track the real work needed before future releases. - New or occasional contributors do not need a separate account to help with QA. - The QA activity is two orders of magnitude lower than other Bugzilla stuff, and so occasional peaks of activity in this area won't flood other Bugzilla developers nor generate a lot of spam (if any). - Last but not least, this may give a better visibility of what we do in the QA area, and may encourage more developers to contribute. Using a separate Bugzilla installation and a separate IRC channel make us to be really ignored (though the #qa-bugzilla IRC channel will remain our main channel for QA). So to be clear, this move only affects work done around scripts in http://bzr.mozilla.org/bugzilla/qa/. This has nothing to do with test scripts being in the t/ or xt/ directory in bugzilla itself. If you have any question about this move, do not hesitate to contact me, either by email or on IRC. Till Search.pm is fixed to go look at these new tables to retrieve them, tags will be unusable in queries for the next few days/weeks (this is intentional!). You can track progress in bug 616341. To be clear: this means that you can still add and remove tags from the footer of the page (for those who have enabled this feature), but you will not be able to run queries based on tags till bug 616341 is fixed. The data is there, but you cannot access it yet. Less pleasant: When I committed bug 616185, I incorrectly parsed queries to extract bug IDs, because 1,2,3 was stored as 1%2C2%2C3 in the DB, i.e. commas where encoded as %2C (in Bugzilla 3.x and 4.0, but not in 2.22), but my regular expression used [\s,]+ directly, unencoded. On PostgreSQL, this means that checksetup.pl would fail, complaining that you tried to insert a string into an integer field. On MySQL, it would silently discard everything after the first bug ID, resulting in dataloss. So if you upgraded your 4.1 installation between 4:07am and 4:56am PST (12:07 and 12:56 GMT) today, then you may have to use your backup to restore the DB. If your installation doesn't use bug tags, then you are not affected. If you use PostgreSQL and checksetup.pl didn't complain, then you are not affected. Also, Bugzilla 4.0rc2 and older are not affected by this checkin as I didn't commit my patch on these branches. Sorry for the inconvenience, LpSolit
