Releasing Bugzilla to CPAN

Max,

maybe I was a bit hasty in creating an initial patch that would allow
the upload
of Bugzilla to CPAN or did I misunderstand your comment from a few weeks ago
and you are actually vehemently against uploading Bugzilla to CPAN?

Based on the comments on the blog entry and my discussion with others
it seems that people would be happy to see Bugzilla on CPAN. By making this
move it will push the CPAN toolchain to fill any hole it might have that the
current packaging and installation system of Bugzilla fills.

So let's discuss this. What does the Bugzilla installation process do that is
not available in the current CPAN toolchain? Answering this question might not
be easy as I don't know what does the Bugzilla installation process do and
you don't know what the CPAN toolchain does.

Hence I started to create a Makefile.PL that could be tweaked until it fulfills
the needs of Bugzilla and if something is really missing we could ask
the toolchain
authors to support those features.

My recommendation would be to change the version number of Bugzilla to be
3.70_01 and upload it to CPAN ASAP. That would allow people to see it
and test it
but it will NOT show up in he index so regular people would not be
able to install it.

(The underscore 01 part means that it is a "developer release")

If after a few week or months you don't see progress you can delete it from CPAN
and it will be gone. No old unsupported version available from CPAN.

For now, I'll fix the issues you mentioned in the bug and we can go on
from there.

regards
   Gabor
