Subject: Rest API test server change

Until now, the REST API test server has been 
bugzilla-stage-tip.mozilla.org. However, Mozilla IT want access to that 
server more closely restricted, because it runs test Bugzilla code and 
its database has Mozilla security bugs in, and they think those two 
things combined make it a risk.

So I'm going to switch the test install of BzAPI to point at an install 
on Landfill, the Bugzilla project's test server. This is the sort of 
thing landfill is designed for (thanks, Max! :-). It means it won't have 
as large or as interesting a set of bugs to play with, but it means it 
will actually work, which could be considered a good thing.

So
https://api-dev.bugzilla.mozilla.org/stage/*
will stop working entirely, and instead we will have:
https://api-dev.bugzilla.mozilla.org/test/*

Changing the URL alerts people who don't read these groups but are using 
the test server that there's been a change of back end Bugzilla.

I'm pushed for time now so I plan to make this switch in a week, when I 
return from holiday.

Always remember that these public installs of BzAPI are 
best-efforts-only; if you have a business-critical reason for needing 
one, you may want to install your own.

	Okay, sound totally good to me. :-) If you need any sysadmin stuff on
landfill, let me know.

	Mozilla IT will have to change the DNS record for
api-dev.bugzilla.mozilla.org for you, though. I'm not sure how possible
that will be, since I suspect right now it's a wildcard. But I think you
can specify individual hostnames before wildcards and it will work.

I'm about to translate Bugzilla into Danish. And so, as advised by the 
Localizers Guide, I'm making myself known in the newsgroup.

To be fair, I'm not that much of a technical monk, so I might come 
across some difficulties when working with the translation. In such 
case, is there anybody here to hold my hand?

I would be happy to help you, and I guess C?dric too. C?dric is the
maintainer of french templates. There are some other developers who
maintain other l10n templates which can probably give a hand too (Marc
and himorin come to mind).

Yes, that's correct. You will have to be careful, though, because code
and strings are mixed together in templates, so it's not always obvious
to know what needs to be translated and what shouldn't. Feel free to ask.

I think I'm getting the hang of it. I've done some perl and python a 
long time ago. So hopefully I'll steer clear of translating any 
code-strings.

	As some of you may know, yesterday Oracle demonstrated that they are
clearly opposed and dangerous to open-source software:

	Our current Oracle driver is a semi-dangerous hack with many bugs. It
is maintained by Oracle, Inc. I'm not sure if it will even be possible
to make it work with trunk, where Search.pm is going to be using a lot
more sub-selects.

	I personally would like to remove Oracle support from Bugzilla.
However, it's not primarily for the technical reasons stated above, but
because I simply no longer wish to cooperate with or support Oracle,
given their business practices. I was thinking that we'd simply remove
the Oracle driver from trunk (though it would stay in 4.0 and below).
Users wishing to migrate their Bugzilla DB away from Oracle could still
use bzdbcopy.pl in Bugzilla 4.0 and below, so they wouldn't be blocked
from upgrading to a newer Bugzilla.

	Oracle, Inc. is still welcome to maintain an Oracle driver. After all,
this is open source. When people ask us about Oracle support, we'd be
happy to point them to a separate, Oracle-maintained driver. (After all,
it's just two files.) I simply am not interested in continuing to review
any code related to it, and don't want to ship it with Bugzilla.

	MySQL is also owned by Oracle. I'd strongly recommend that people use
MariaDB instead:

	MariaDB is a drop-in replacement for MySQL with better performance and
features, created and maintained by the original author of MySQL, Monty
Widenius.

	At some point when distros generally all carry MariaDB, I'd also like
to update the documentation to recommend MariaDB instead of MySQL
(although this has a larger technical justification than my desire to
remove Oracle support from Bugzilla, and is probably something to
discuss in another thread at another time).

	Anyhow, I'm interested to hear feedback on this and the general sense
of the community about it. I'm sorry to the nice people who I've worked
with at Oracle--this isn't about any individuals, it's about what
organizations we want to support as a project.

I have added some comments inline.  My opinion is that it's completely valid to drop Oracle for the technical reasons you cite, but that it's unwise to make engineering decisions based on whether we approve or disapprove of the people or businesses involved.

Someone must decide what to do about this, and I assume that's going to be you.  To whatever extent my opinion matters, I fully endorse whatever the decision is.  I'll hope you'll make it based more for technical reasons and less for your regard for Oracle's business practices.

As you stated in your follow-on email, this is your opinion, and while I don't entirely disagree with it, I think you're extrapolating a lot from a legal maneuver.  It is not uncommon for a patent lawsuit to be filed as a means of forcing cross-licensing.  Whether Oracle is or isn't opposed and dangerous to open-source software is debatable, but I wouldn't use legal machinations as evidence one way or another.

It's certainly your prerogative to neither support nor cooperate with Oracle.  If Oracle stuff isn't compatible with what's in the trunk and no one is able to get it "trunk-worthy," then it makes sense to drop it from what ships.

How do you know he's not going to sell MariaDB to some equally nasty company and write another impassioned article about MariaDB is now the spawn of evil and how we all ready need to be using Super-Open Database #3?

By making Bugzilla work on Oracle, are you supporting Oracle or your users who, for whatever reason, are using Oracle.  Couldn't someone make just as valid an argument that helping people put Bugzilla on Windows are supporting Microsoft, which has exhibited the same sort of behavior that makes you want to drop Oracle?

	Yeah, I'm actually not too certain about it, myself. I usually don't do
it--in fact, I've advocated against making technical decisions for
emotional reasons, on this very list. I feel pretty strongly about
software patents, and I really personally feel that what Oracle is doing
is harmful to open source adoption and the Internet as a whole. So I
have a hard time wanting to work with them on a product that's very

	True, however it is unusual to file a patent lawsuit against an
open-source project. I think that in the open-source community,
attacking an open-source project via patent law is considered rather

	Well, anybody could do anything, but MySQL is *presently* owned by
Oracle and MariaDB is not. (And there are numerous technical advantages
to using MariaDB.)

	Well, both. The more applications that work with Oracle, the better
Oracle does. It wouldn't probably be more harmful to Bugzilla adoption

	They could, and if this were about 10 years ago, I'd absolutely support
them. I think that since then, however, Microsoft has almost completely
turned around and has been working great with the open-source community
for many years.

really need to see that it's important for us to continue supporting
Oracle even though I think they're being generally harmful as an
organization.

I think the technical aspect is important to us. As long as xiaoou, or
any new contributor with the required skills to fix the Oracle driver,
fixes bugs so that it still works fine with Bugzilla, there is no reason
to drop this driver. From the questions I can read on IRC and the bugs
filed on bmo, there are clearly some installations using Bugzilla with
Oracle. I don't know how much, I don't know if they were already using
Bugzilla before we supported it or if they moved to Bugzilla because it
now supports Oracle, but the fact is that the Bugzilla + Oracle
combination exists.

But even if we support MariaDB one day, we won't drop support for MySQL.
This would be the biggest error we could do, IMHO. All small teams using
Bugzilla with few skills in the Perl and/or DB areas would stop using
Bugzilla, or would stick with an old version of Bugzilla forever.

by supporting oracle database the bugzilla community is learning about 
it and following its development .
if you drop support for oracle then the community will loose that 
knowledge .
you mentioned technical aspect versus business aspect , but i think 
there is also the community aspect since
people would want to join this community because it has wide knowledge 
and provides support for various technologies .

knowledge is universal , and most valuable .
so even if oracle wants to share only limited amount of knowledge , you 
still should not shut the door for it .

Hi there,

it's my first steps with writing Greasemonkey userscripts... I've got 
one up and running, but I am stuck with the one attached to this post.

It all works and comes out nicely, but there's one problem:
It breaks the "Edit" button next to summary (to edit the summary).
I have no idea why. Can you help?

It's a simple thing: I am adding some HTML to include a link button that 
makes copying "Bug 123456 - Sample bug summary" simpler than having to 
carefully select bug no and summary with mouse dragging or 
keyboard-shift-select, while paying attention not to click the bug 
link... With the script, it's just one click on the copy button, press 
Ctrl+C, and you're done (still room for improvement, I know).

Technically, all I do is use onload function to replace the .innerHTML 
of the <span id="summary_alias_container"> with the original .innerHTML 
plus some extra HTML code for my copy button. So I am not actually 
changing anything of the original HTML, just adding. Is it something 
about the DOM which I don't see?

I noticed in FireBug that the currentTarget is different:
(After loading the page, press "Pause at next line" button on the left 
on Firebug's Script tab, then click on (edit)-Summary link; in the 
"Watch" tab on the left, open the tree for Z, scroll down)

currentTarget, after clicking on (edit)-Summary:
Without script: a#editme_action#
With script: Document show_bug.cgi?id=558931#
But why?

Any help would be appreciated, even workarounds as long as they place 
the copy link in the same position.

I agree with Max' reasoning and would support that removing Oracle.pm
as a file while still accepting necessary changes related to Oracle as
an underlying database to the remaining parts, in particular DB.pm,
would be a sensible compromise.

Though I may agree with some of Max's philosophical points, I do not believe that Oracle should be deleted for those reasons.  If Oracle no longer support the maintenance of their module, delete it.  If they sue Mozilla & Co., delete it.  But the fact is, Oracle support is nice.  It keeps Bugzilla from becoming intertwined with a single DB provider and keeps us flexible.  It also gives large companies the ability to use Bugzilla - MySQL would get a big "n. o." in many places, but Oracle supports makes Bugzilla look 'grown up' in the eyes of the PHB.

I disagree, Bugzilla isn't here to make a political point. Its a tool. I would be greatly disinclined to continue supporting bugzilla or working on the mssql port if this were to occur. As I could see a similar reaction to some of Microsoft's stances. The mssql modules are essentially done, just pending time for me to render new patches. I think the goal should be to accept any functional db ports someone cares to offer up do long as they continue to be supported. Else we become no better than any other proprietary piece of software functioning only within tightly defined environment.

this is open source. When people ask us about Oracle support, we'd be
happy to point them to a separate, Oracle-maintained driver. (After all,
it's just two files.) I simply am not interested in continuing to review
any code related to it, and don't want to ship it with Bugzilla.

	MySQL is also owned by Oracle. I'd strongly recommend that people use
MariaDB instead:

And I think that is the key consideration. As despicable as Oracle's 
behavior is, IMO, the impact of dropping support for from Bugzilla would 
fall most heavily on Bugzilla users, not on Oracle.

If the goal is to send a message and apply pressure to Oracle to get 
them to do the right thing then I suggest doing just that: a public 
written statement (from the Mozilla foundation? Bugzilla lead?) along 
the lines of "happy to have supported Oracle's database in the past but 
strongly disagree and urge them to reverse course" etc, would achieve 
the same effect without the risk of making Oracle-running Bugzilla users 
pay the price.

Just my 0.02 USD (1967 dollars, adjusted for inflation)

I'm with kip on this one. Dropping Oracle will not hurt Oracle, but will impact the Bugzilla user community. Having run user groups, one of the key areas where intent can be clarified is by going directly to Oracle. Bugzilla is of tremendous value to our organizations. We use it and support it because it's more effective for our organizations than other solutions. Clearly there's a value proposition here. Surely Oracle can't be blind to that. Perhaps we could approach them for formal sponsorship (a.k.a. Oracle licenses to help make the support non-buggy, visibility on web sites). This would make their position clear w.r.t. Bugzilla. Of course, if they choose to toss us into the dumpster, well, that's another story. Perhaps we can give them a chance to participate.

(My context: I'm trying to do the same with HP's NonStop group to get Bugzilla supported there - an ongoing interest with its own set of issues relating more to Perl than Bugzilla at this point).

the German localization uses Bazaar for version control, just like
Bugzilla itself does. So there are no CVS folders.
Feel free to use any version control system you like (although I'd
personally recommend Bazaar). If you use CVS, and if you have a
publicly visible repository, your users may find it comfortable to
update via CVS. So it might be a good idea to include the CVS folders.

I'd include Bazaar folders with the German localization, but it seems
I've damaged the repository at Sourceforge. So it doesn't make much
sense these days.

	Okay, so it sounds like the consensus here is:

	(a) We don't like what Oracle is doing.

	(b) However, currently, supporting the Oracle database helps Bugzilla,
and we think that decisions like this should be based more on technical
merit than on any sort of political feelings about the situation.

	So, I'm perfectly happy to keep the Oracle driver around for now.

And per discussion on IRC, that's a tentative date, subject to change. 
Mozilla's having an employee gathering sometime in early December, and 
it'd be nice to align this so a few remote Mozilla employees (like me 
for one) who are being flown in for that can attend, but the exact date 
for that hasn't been set yet.

Oracle's obnoxiousness is orthogonal to Oracle's usefulness/required-ness in
some contexts. The Bugzilla project doesn't need to go out of its way to
support it -- but those of us who use Bugzilla on Oracle have a
responsibility to do what we can to keep it running on Oracle. I joined the
project some months back and haven't really gotten up to speed yet. This has
me motivated  to go back and figure out where I can help.

Yahoo! can likely be very flexible about scheduling.

As mentioned on the invite, our location is close to the VTA train (although it's a bit of a walk) and the 26 and 54 routes for the VTA bus.  I don't yet know how we'll get people to and from Caltrain, but we will.  There will be ample parking.

Try to arrive before 8, because that's when our coffee bar closes.  The food will include vegetarian options.

Please contact me directly if you are attending and have any special needs, and I'll do my best to accommodate them.

than us killing them from the params list via
Bugzilla::WebServices::Util->_delete_bad_keys

If not then the note in the above method and resulting key check seem
to be wrong:

Flag field include a '-' causing them to be removed during
Bugzilla::WebServices::Util->taint_data's call to _delete_bad_keys

And that date has been set now, the Mozilla remote folks will be in town 
December 13-17.  Don't know how entrenched people are in that date, so 
I'll let people discuss whether to move it or not.  It'd be nice for me 
to be able to go though ;)

Subject: An Extension for Extra Components and Extra Versions

	Hey folks. So, for Red Hat, we (Everything Solved) wrote an extension
that offers the ability to select "extra components" and "extra
versions" that affect a bug. It adds two new custom fields,
cf_extra_versions and cf_extra_components, that contain all the same
values as your Version and Component field do, on each bug.

	In Bugzilla 4.0 and later, when you search the Version and Component
fields, the Extra Version and Extra Component fields will be searched,
too. Essentially, this is a simple way of being able to say that a bug
affects more than one component or more than one version.

	There's a version of the extension that supports Bugzilla 4.2, that you
can check out from bzr, like this:

	bzr co bzr://bzr.mozilla.org/bugzilla/extensions/ExtraValues /trunk
ExtraValues

	Then just copy the ExtraValues directory to the "extensions" directory
of your Bugzilla, and run checksetup.pl.

	We also have a version that will support 3.6 and 4.0. If anybody is
interested in installing the extension on those versions, please let me
know and I'll post the 3.6/4.0 version.

Can you make the URL to the commit a link to show the details? 
Also, can we customize the "base url" of the commit so it could utilize
something like ViewVC (which uses a separate URL for subversion than the
actual commit URL).

This is looking really nice, I just barely implemented Scmbug for our
users, but I would be more than happy to switch to this once it is
production ready.

	Yep. There's a configuration variable that allows you to specify how
repository commits are translated into a URL for a web view.

privileges for test installations on landfill. Finally, I've created a
system where people can create their own temporary Bugzilla
installations, here:

	https://landfill.bugzilla.org/tools/create.cgi

	It's also linked from the front page of landfill.bugzilla.org. When you
use that system, you can automatically create a fully-populated Bugzilla
installation that you are the administrator of. So now, anybody can try
out the administrative features of Bugzilla without having to ask
anybody or set up anything!
