Prefs Removal Proposal

Yeah, Max is right, here, unfortunately...  Maybe we need three-state
selectors for the auth methods... instead of just on and off, have on,
staging, and off, or somethign.  Off doesn't show the prefs, staging
shows the prefs but doesn't actually use them, and on actually uses them?
