can open ids include spaces and commas?

i think it's time to let users assign nicknames to other users. i'm 
tired of people changing their names, and it's been mentioned among the 
mozilla security group because you sometimes end up accidentally cc'ing 
someone you don't trust because the person you trusted changed their name.
