Authentication via PAM/NIS?

Hi,

is it possible to reuse an existing user database other than LDAP
(e.g. a NIS database) to authenticate users against?

We'd like to use bugzilla as a ticketing system for a helpdesk, but
would not like to have the users create new accounts/passwords
etc. Eventually we will be going the LDAP route anyway, but the
helpdesk is top priority right now.

I've found a couple of older rfes and even said to exist patches here:

It looks like it's been attacked quite a few times in the past, so
perhaps I just didn't find the right patch, yet?
