I was just hoping that their might be a more responsive forum. How long did you wait? There's almost always people in there, though if you hit at a point when people are busy or sleeping it may be an hour or two before someone answers. Generally once you get someone's attention they're pretty responsive. If you're continuing to have bad luck there, the mozilla-webtools list (aka netscape.public.mozilla.webtools) is the next-best place to ask. And as someone else mentioned before, either in IRC or on the mailing list/newsgroup, if you can tell us a little bit about your problem it will save some time... For example, if you go on IRC and ask "can someone help me with installing Bugzilla?", but everyone happens to be busy or sleeping or whatever at the time... an hour later, someone says "sure, what's up?" but you were off doing something while you waited, and didn't see their reply for 10 or 15 minutes. Then you come back and ask your question and that person's gone again. If the question is stated up-front, then they might have actually answered it when they saw it, and you wouldn't have to wait for them again. -- Dave Miller http://www.justdave.net/ System Administrator, Mozilla Foundation http://www.mozilla.org/ Project Leader, Bugzilla Bug Tracking System http://www.bugzilla.org/ From myk at mozilla.org Tue Jun 7 20:00:41 2005 From: myk at mozilla.org (Myk Melez) Date: Tue, 07 Jun 2005 13:00:41 -0700 Subject: stylize html In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <42A5FCE9.4060904@mozilla.org> ???? ??? wrote: > hello. > > i'm using bugzilla for my local projects and bugzilla html is very bad. > may i help you with prettify your html? Absolutely! A number of the problems have already been reported in the User Interface component in the Bugzilla product on bugzilla.mozilla.org, where we use Bugzilla to track its own bugs. The best way to improve Bugzilla's HTML is to look at the User Interface component to see what bugs have been reported , choose some bugs to fix, file new bug reports if there aren't existing ones for the work you want to do, attach patches, and ask reviewers to review the changes. Note that the most successful patches are small ones that fix individual problems rather than large ones that bundle multiple (potentially unrelated) fixes. Note also that as soon as the Bugzilla tree reopens for 2.22 development I'll be holding weekly online UI hackathons where each week we target a specific part of the Bugzilla interface for improvements. Your participation in those hackathons would be welcome! > examples: > labels for inputs > moving colors and styles to css file > (may be) replace table menus with ul/li menus > move html code from perl code to templates These changes sound good (except possibly the table->ul change, which would depend on the particular table in question). See bugs blocking the Bugzilla UI code conversion meta-bug for examples of work that has already been done in this vein. > if i may help you, then please say me, which version to patch - 2.18 > or 2.19 ? For a patch to be accepted into the Bugzilla tree for inclusion into the next release, it should be made against the latest Bugzilla code available in CVS. You can obtain such a version by CVS updating a Bugzilla installation (back it up first, and don't do it on your main production version). If you can't make your patch against the latest code from CVS, you may be able to get away with making it against the most recent developer release (i.e. 2.19.x at the moment) if the code you are changing hasn't been modified since that version. But that's a risky proposition; you're much better off working from the Bugzilla tip. -myk -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I've looked through many of the UI-related bugs. Some bug comments make reference to a grand CSS/skinning plan, but I couldn't find a link or compilation of what this plan is. Can someone send me in the direction of that? Re: waiting for the tree to open and 2.22 development to begin. Does this mean we should wait until this point in the future before we could start submitting patches for UI-component bugs? I have a draft ready for a slightly-improved show_bug page. My localconfig has user 'bugs' and the proper password. When logging in with: mysql -u bugs -p I am prompted for the password and then logs in. There is no 'bugs' database to attach to though because checkconfig.pl errors on the template portion and doesn't create the 'bugs' database. I doubt there are multiple copies of either because before installing either Perl 5.8 or mySQL 4.1.12, I performed a 'find * / | grep -i [perl/mysql]' and removed all occurences so that the install would be clean. -D Some men see things as they are and say "why?". How did you remove Perl and MySQL? Are you sure you removed not only the executables, but the libraries and support files? This is not sounding good. If I were in your shoes, I would start over on a clean system and forget upgrading Perl and MySQL. I'd install Bugzilla on the stock system first so you can prove to yourself that it works. After that, I'd consider playing with newer versions of Perl and MySQL. From what I'm hearing you say (as above), it seems there is a real problem with the libraries Perl is attempting to use. Just grab the SRPM for perl-DBD-mysql and edit the spec file to change the dependency from mysql-devel to MySQL-devel (just a case change) then rebuild it. It works. If you're not anal about using RPMs, it's much easier to just use CPAN to install DBD::mysql from source. -- Dave Miller http://www.justdave.net/ System Administrator, Mozilla Foundation http://www.mozilla.org/ Project Leader, Bugzilla Bug Tracking System http://www.bugzilla.org/ From Axel.Thimm at ATrpms.net Thu Jun 9 10:25:45 2005 From: Axel.Thimm at ATrpms.net (Axel Thimm) Date: Thu, 9 Jun 2005 12:25:45 +0200 Subject: Authentication via PAM/NIS? Bugzilla has not been tested with MySQL 5.0.x and MySQL 5.0.x is not recommended by MySQL AB for production use at this time. Be aware that MySQL is not backwards compatible from MySQL 4.1 to 4.0 due to a significant change in MySQL with how it encrypts passwords. Once users have upgraded to MySQL 4.1, they will not be able to go backwards without loosing user passwords. There are significant advantages, however, to having MySQL 4.1 like subselects. --- Kevin Benton Perl/Bugzilla Developer Advanced Micro Devices The opinions stated in this communication do not necessarily reflect the view of Advanced Micro Devices and have not been reviewed by management. Huge bait for spambots. 2) if you have a large number of users then you have to download the entire user list for every bug you view. In our case it was a significant slow down on the page. Just my US$0.02 We implemented a user lookup that is a popup search box that then queries the database and enters the one you choose. I've done the trivial modification as per the patch below, which adds creation_ts to the list of available options, but the main issues are: - I would like the label to say "Bug creation date", not "time" - It follows that I am abusing the creation_ts' column, so even if I was to hack in an evil rename somewhere, I wouldn't allow the actual creation_ts to be offered as a potential column. As such, using autocomplete works a lot better than the listbox (in fact there are usually ~5 people per letter and i usually want the middle one). As the list grows beyond 30 things get considerably worse, you get more collisions and you're always better served by any form of completion or nicknaming. Browsers especially mozilla tend to behave terribly with any form of a list like this. Actually, the creation /date/ is not really unique -- the creation /timestamp/ may be unique, but if you look at the patch I actually DATE_FORMAT() the timestamp into a date. The report essentially shows how many bugs were opened on a certain day, which is a report that is surprisingly interesting. (That means that there would be a 2.20rc2 released along with 2.18.2, something I'd rather avoid if at all possible.) Also, here's a list of all the bugs that are targeted at 2.20, 2.18, or 2.16 (basically a list of all the bugs that anybody might want to work on for 2.20): http://tinyurl.com/dcddh Overall, I'd really like to release 2.20rc1 on June 27th. Even if it was, you are allowed to do that under the terms of the MPL, the license under which Bugzilla is distributed: http://www.bugzilla.org/download/ http://www.mozilla.org/MPL/ Since you've made modifications to Bugzilla, it might be a good idea to discuss [here] if the changes you made are suitable for integration with the main Bugzilla product -- sharing the work makes a better product for everybody. I'm neither an expert on BZ or OpenID development, and my Perl is rusty. I'm not sure I'll have the skill/patience/whatever to finish. I've been a production user of BZ in the past, but these days, I'm puttering around with a private install of the latest 2.19.3+ out of CVS. Here are my initial impressions of how I should approach this: * I'm thinking of using Auth/Login/CGI as a starting point, leveraging Auth/Login/CGI/Cookie as close to "as is" as possible. * I'm not sure how to approach IDs. A URI is a valid identifier, and can take different forms. For example, my LiveJournal ID can be "robla.livejournal.com" or "livejournal.com/users/robla" or "http://livejournal.com/users/robla". Note that none of these are "robla at livejournal.com". So, I'm wondering how best to approach this: a. Make it so that the full gamut of OpenID's can be used as BZ IDs b. Still require a mailing address, but auth against the OpenID server, and store the OpenID information in a new field in the database c. some other approach Thoughts? I'm not entirely sure what the content this other field would be -- but I'm unfamiliar with OpenID and that might explain why. At any rate I understand why it's important. The getgrnam function is unimplemented at checksetup.pl line 1106.

Well, first:

    http://www.perl.com/doc/FAQs/nt/perlwin32faq5.html

Second, we protect all calls to getgrnam() from being called on Win32.

Third, oh. 2.16.10. Sorry, 2.16 won't run on win32 without getting your
hands dirty. Use 2.20, err, I said CVS HEAD .

Take care,

2.18 works without modification on win32, use that instead of 2.20/CVS HEAD.

Message-ID: <42C37F42.1050608@bugzilla.org>

Since a couple people are working on things that would be good to have
some wiki space for so people have a general "white board" type place to
edit for it, I've set up a namespace on the Mozilla Wiki for
Bugzilla-related pages.

Starting off at http://wiki.mozilla.org/Bugzilla:Main_Page

Any page whose name starts with "Bugzilla:" will be considered part of
our space.
