I think a common thread is the need to encourage new contributors to 
discuss their plans with a reviewer before investing a lot of time in a 
patch.  That way, they will have design issues and general roadmap 
issues addressed in advance as well as confirming that someone is 
actually interested enough in the feature to do the review.
