I wouldn't say it's too late to back it out.  After all, we haven't 
shipped it in a release yet.  If it hasn't been baked enough, it may be 
wise to remove it for 2.22 and check it back in for 2.24.  Or, since 
code hooks are ready to land as soon as the tree opens for 2.24 
checkins, we could reconstitute it as an extension and bake it there 
until popularity and experience make it ready for inclusion into the 
mainline code.
