Well, the problem is solved in some places and not others. The very
nature of the current solution is that it's context-specific hacks - it
can't be reused. That's the issue I'm trying to address, by changing to
something which does not require such hacks.

Could you be specific about what additional problems you think changing
from "" to e.g. "---" or "[None]" would cause?
