Unfortunately, nobody has ever submitted a patch for review in a state
to land. That is the real issue. I am sure that there are many people
who would love to have custom fields. What we need is someone to do the
real work of implementing, testing, fixing, and reviewing the patches.
So far, NOBODY has stepped up to the plate to do that. We can't land a
"proposal" nor can we land a patch against 2.18. If we actually had a
candidate to review, then we could establish if the patch makes a big
mess or not.

Speaking as someone who has landed multiple MAJOR changes successfully
and as the person who has reviewed a huge number of the database
independence code [Stuart - how much have you reviewed??], my advice is
unchanged. Do not attempt to land a mega-patch when a step-by-step
approach will work.

Since it is almost as much work to review a patch as it is to write it,
I am beginning to feel a lot like the little red hen here. If you want
to help out, help out. Just whining about the feature not being done
does not really help at all.
