What are bugs? Are bugs really work items?

Does anybody knows an easy way to change bug statuses? If you want to
change the statuses now you have to change the code and many different
places, any ideas on how to simplify this task?

I can certainly understand that silence may mean a variety of things. 
Thanks for letting me know it wasn't for the reasons I feared at least
