Charts - empty image files

GD is version 1.8.4, and the Chart module appears to be version 0.99.
Another interesting thing that I just noticed is that I can get an image
to appear if I use the 'New Charts' feature of 2.17.6 and I leave the
date range blank. However, on the X-axis there is only one date (today)
and no data points, so this is not very useful.
