What happened to the name queries on in search/knob.html.tmpl

I was going to report this as a bug (and if you tell me to, I shall),
but thought I'd query here.  

Why were the named queries removed from the
template/en/default/search/knob.html.tmpl from 2.16 going into 2.17?
The functionality is still described in the "The Rest of the Form"
section of queryhelp.cgi -- and a number of users here would like it
back.   

Before I hack it back in on our local copy (and file the Bugzilla
entry):  why was this removed?
