I think there are a lot of advantages you don't notice to storing
attachments in the database. For example, greater ease of backup and
restore or migration from one server to another, the impossibility of
the attachments and the DB getting out of sync, and their potential
searchability (we haven't implemented it, but "all attachments checked
in in the last month which are patches and contain the string
'wibble.xml'" would be a handy search feature).
