I'm no expert in this stuff, but I think SOAP is analogous to COM
whereas XML-RPC is analogous to, well, RPC. (Using this reference
http://archive.devx.com/javaSR/articles/glossary/glossary-2.asp )

I did mistake UDDI for being a global registry of WSDL specifications.
Don't remember who is hosting those anymore.
