Upgrading from v2.14.x to v2.17.x

I've found some documentation on how to upgrade the code base (using cvs, tarball or patch) from one version to next.

How do i upgrade the database from v2.14.x to v2.17.x.  Have there been any schema changes?  Is there some mechanism for rollback?

Is there a recommended version of mySQL?
