Please note that the relative dates in the search faeture are there so one 
does not have to know the value of the current time.

You can only enter an absolute date or a date relative to the current 
time.

I am unable to test 2.16.1 but have tested this on 2.16.3 (the stable 
release)

does "> 2002-01-01 and 7" give a date format error? or just a list from 
2002-01-01 to 7 days ago?

BUT this does not seem to be at all related to your origianl question.
