I'm all for encouraging people to think before they do things, but the
perceived harm of making it easy seems like FUD. If we can make the
process less painful on the development side, what harm is there in
letting people add fields to see if they'll be of any use?

Programming is a Dark Art, and it will always be. The programmer is
fighting against the two most destructive forces in the universe:
entropy and human stupidity. They're not things you can always
overcome with a "methodology" or on a schedule.
